NCMS, UP-MSI hold 2020 Webinar Series on Philippine Seas

UNACOM forged partnership with the University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) to conduct a Webinar Series on Philippine Seas after the Partners’ Forum and Fellowship in March. Due to the pandemic, its first installment was delayed and moved to 30 November 2020. Experts discussed: population connectivity in the West Philippine Sea by Dr. Rachel Rayago-Gotangco; potential effects of man-made artificial islands in the West Philippine Sea by Dr. Cesar Villanoy; and importance of offshore reefs in the Philippine rise by Dr. Patrick Cabaitan. Its second installment, held last 07 December 2020, covered: diversity of seaweeds in the Philippine archipelago by Dr. Wilfred John Santibañez; drug discovery from marine cyanobacteria by Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion; and emerging pollutants as threats to Philippine marine biodiversity by Dr.Caroline Jaruala. This webinar series that reached hundreds of stakeholders will continue along with the other planned activities for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
